Hello Learners

A pleasant day/night to all of you.

To begin with let me know what you find interesting and new to your experience in chapter 1. The chapter is entitled "Introduction to Computers" and spans 35 pages. I await to hear from you. Ask any questions you like of me and your peers and do make it healthy and worthwhile.

  1. one of the disadvantages of using the computer was noted as saying it impacts on labour force.

However I see this as being both positive and negative in terms of how you view the comment.

If you look at it from a labour force view then you will see that it can reduce the labour force in an organization. However if looked at from a business man view then to him/her it will help save on over run cost.

  2. It was great that you started with this very interesting comment. Thanks.

This is my initial take on what you raised. Good point Daniella. Because we are living in a knowledge based society and a technological one at that, the work (labour) force must be different. Yes, some traditional jobs will become obsolete because new ones looms presently and more will come in the future, so we humans must be mindful of that and move to make ourselves marketable.

Your thoughts now and any other person from the class.

  3. Would it then be correct to say, snce technology is becoming such an integral part of our day to day lives, and its always changing there is a need to keep up to date with these changes (especially at the workplace)..... Technology overload is possible?

    ReplyDelete
  4. What do understand technology overload to be in the workplace or otherwise?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Where a person may feel great need to always be involved in or using the lastest technology.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I believe the bigest dis advantage of using the latest technology comes in educating and getting a workforce to effectively use the new technology. Its in us all to adapt to something and not want to change and with the rapid chages in technology it forces us to keep up to date and adapt to the changes. So i agree with Candace. Some businesses do not require the latest technology to operate effictively, but still choose to do so. The result is a high technology expense and alot of time wasting on training.

  7. It was noted in Chapter 1 that a Monitor is an output device (meaning that it conveys information to one or more people) however can it be said that a touch screen computer like a touch screen cash register be describe as both an input and output device. Since we input data into it and it process that data into information for us to see

  8. I agree with Finbar... technology changes everyday and it would be a waste of money to always try and keep up. Take for example Microsoft Office. In 2007 everyone started to upgrade from 2003 to that year's version and now 3 years later while people are still upgrading they released the 2010 beta version.

  11. Guys i dont have the text! Can some raise a few topics from the 1st 2 chapters so we can start getting some participation marks.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I also agree with Finbar, however even though there may be some time 'wasted' with training staff on new technological advances, the result would be a faster, more accurate and efficient workforce. The new technology would be considered an investment by the business, because output would be increased, thus increasing profits.

  13. finbar ryan you need to go online and download slides or the text to get your input up on the board

  14. Thanks daniella. But i dont think the website is up yet for us to get slides. At least thats what i was told in business class. If it is up however, can you post the link or email it to me please. Thanks

  15. Your quite right Natasha. But its my belief as well as my experience that in trinidad technology or should i say computers are only as fast as the user. I'd give an example... I worked in IT at Republic Bank and we did an upgrade of one of our smaller softwares. With the help of my manager we ensured that everyone learned it well and used it, not knowing that they were so accustomed to the old system that they hated it. Even though the new system is a bit more simple and had a windows interface instead of a DOS interface which is a black screen with green or white digits only. Eventually they downsized and my manager was deployed and i resigned before they deployed me. I recently went to visit only to learn that they all went back to the old system and were actually getting more work done. So sad to say, there are places out there that still use a system with an interface thats about 20 years old and still get more work done.

  16. Yes I managed to get online - finally.
There is the increase in use of VoIP internationally but my question is would regular telecommunication survive this escalating trend of VoIP. Can someone tell me if this system is paid for and is it the belief that more companies would buy-in to this and places like tstt, at&t or would they become obsolete?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I finally managed to get online. Thanks Finabr for guiding me through the steps.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think that telecommunications can outlast VoIP because VoIP while it may catch on with the younger generation quickly, you might have difficulties in getting the older generation to adapt to it because it is already difficult to get them to use a cellphone or even to use simple applications on a computer

    ReplyDelete
  19. awebestory you made a valid point when you state that getting the older generation to adapt but not all cases this is true because some of the older generation loves modern technologies so much that they adapt quickly to the new environs of today world better than the younger generations it all depends on there level of thinking an exploring.

  20. For those who believe that you tube should be banned from schools..... My english usage lecturer give us some useful info via you tube. I strongly think that youtube is a great form of getting learning done effectively. As for Facebook in schools i have mixed views. I think there are just as many advantages as dis advantages.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Finbar I agree that YOUTUBE can be used as a learning platform and maybe even FACEBOOK as Mr. Warner was illustrating. However I think that it should be closely monitored if it is to be used, cause as adults we know of the things that can be found on either of these two sites.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Though I am leaning on the side of agreeing with both you,Candace and Finbar, if we as a society decide that YOUTUBE and FACEBOOK are media for students then we need to socially and morally educate these students from a very young age. Just last evening I attended a demo on the use of Smart boards in schools and I was not only amazed at the features of this electronic interactive board but the presenter incorporated a science lesson using YOUTUBE in the classroom and WOW I immediately thought of Mr. Warner's suggestion that schools should be allowed to access such supports of YOUTUBE and FACEBOOK in the classroom. Before being in this class I would have been totally against it but now I am trying to support it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree with Finbar & Candace with aspect to youtube & facebook. But this topic can be very tricky, seeing that as much as ther will be advantages, there will also be disadvantages that may over weigh the advantages. But then again this may depend on the maturity of the students...

    ReplyDelete
  24. could someone fill me in on the topic...thanks..

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think youtube is a great way to review a lesson and make it more interesting in schools,so I do agree with Finbar,Candace and Annmarie but Ali did also make a good point that there are disadvantages that may outweigh the advantages of using youtube in the classroom

  26. Hi "Dion.v" ,

  27. Diana why aren't you in English class???

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree youtube and facebook can be used as an effective tool in the classroom. It is up to the students to decide whether to use it for educational purposes or for socializing

    ReplyDelete
  29. Like Ann Marie, my initial view on face book and YouTube being used as a learning tool was negative, but after listening to Mr. Warner and viewing the comments on this blog, my views have changed. I now see the positive impact that these social networking sites (if used properly) can have as effective teaching tools. We know that teens and students, as a whole, spend a lot of time on these social networking sites, thus it would be a great opportunity for teachers to use them to help in the learning process. This class blog for example, as a teaching tool has taught me so much, its encourages discussion about topics, where we can exchange ideas and point of views in an environment that is fun and interactive.

  34. Hello All

Sorry for all the delay in responding to your blog entries. Let me say this first - the exam will not be tomorrow but next week - 17th October 2010. I have to go through all the procedures of sending it to the head of department and then to the office to be printed and sent to me on Sunday - quality control. I have to go through all of this and the office is not open on weekends really. So we will talk tomorrow about this.

Once again sorry about this delay in giving the examination.
